Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some of the Frequently Asked Questions that we receive. If we haven’t answered your question, please do get in touch and we’ll do our best to help.

Q: Is it safe to drive a shared car during the coronavirus pandemic?

A: In line with government guidelines we have done everything we can to reduce the risk of spreading coronavirus through use of our cars and bikes. All members are required to wash or sanitise their hands immediately both before and after using our cars. After use they are also required to disinfect all parts of the car that they have touched, using a simple disinfectant kit that is stored in each car. As in most other situations we cannot guarantee that the virus cannot be spread through use of our cars. We advise all members to follow government guidelines on coronavirus and take responsibility for their own health and safety.

Q: What about putting fuel in?

A: Moray Carshare pays for all fuel. For petrol cars, you buy fuel at a petrol station and record how much fuel you purchased, and leave us a VAT receipt as evidence. You will then be refunded for the cost of the fuel on your next bill. For electric cars, you charge them when you return to one of our base stations, which all have charge points. You use our Charge Place Scotland charge card for this. You can also use this card to recharge at other charge points across the UK.

Q: What about insurance?

A: We provide fully comprehensive insurance. There is an excess of £1000, which you will be charged if you are at fault in an accident. All damage to cars must be reported to us. We repair smaller dents and scrapes ourselves, and only charge you for what it costs us.

Q: Can I drive your cars outside the UK?

A: No. Due to the insurance challenges and the higher risk involved we are not able to offer this service.

Q: How long can I hire a car for?

A: From 30 minutes up to 2 weeks. However, you must observe our fair usage policy, which ensures that there are always a reasonable number of cars available for short trips. See the Membership Agreement for details.

Q: How long can I hire an e-bike for?

A: From 1 hour up to a whole month. We actively encourage longer bookings of a week or a month by offering these at discounted prices.

Q: When can I start booking cars?

A: First you must fill in an application form: see under Join Us. We will then contact you within 2-3 days. If your application is approved, then we will offer you a time for an Introduction Session – usually within 2-3 days and always within a week. You can start using our cars and bikes immediately after this.

Q: Are there any age limits for members?

A: Members must be at least 25 years old. This is for insurance reasons. There is no maximum age limit. However, once you are over 70 you have to renew your licence every 3 years. Also, you must report any health condition that might affect your driving to the DVLA. For a list of conditions, see https://www.gov.uk/health-conditions-and-driving .

Q: Can I join if I have a foreign driving licence?

A: Yes you can, provided you are allowed to drive in the UK. This may depend on how ling you have been in the UK. In general, once you have been resident for more than 12 months you need to have a UK driving licence. For the full rules, see https://www.gov.uk/driving-nongb-licence.

Q: One-way trips: Can I leave a car or bike in a different place?

A: No. Each cars or bike must be returned to the same parking bay or bike shelter that you collected it from.
